Get Firefox

Download Day 2008

Why Firefox?

  • Extensions! Plenty of extensions to make Firefox work the way you want. Especially for us power users.
  • Developer Tools. Less web application complications with Firebug and Web Developer Toolbar.
  • Password Manager that works. IE’s one doesn’t and is hard to manage/use.
  • Safer from adware/spyware. Because IE has a larger user base thus making it a better target.

Having a popular developer ecosystem developing extensions is a big win. You just can’t beat that.

Why not Opera?

  • Too slow! It used to be uber-fast but somehow that fastness has been beaten.
  • Clunky! Opera’s features are not that useful and most are hard to use or obscure.
  • Broken! Many sites broke horribly in Opera. IE-only sites work better in Firefox.

I believe Opera is the safest browser though. It got plenty of useful security features. I use it when I feel I’m not safe online.

Why not Safari?

  • Apple UI feels strange. Sorry, I’m on Windows.
  • Ignorance of ClearType. It’s hard to read when everything else is ClearType-rendered.

Safari execution seems to be faster than Firefox at the moment though, but Firefox 3 is coming any July day now and it promises blazing performance… so I’ll have to wait and see. And Safari doesn’t provide anything superior to IE7 that I find useful. I’d rather pick Opera over Safari if not Firefox.

Why not IE7?

  • Too slow. On Windows XP, it’s just too slow.
  • Broken standards. I hope IE8 will make up for it.
  • NOT safe.
  • Needless to explain.

I love the favorites menu and CTRL+Q tab preview, though.
